We recently completed this custom outdoor living project in the Asheville, North Carolina area, bringing together natural stone, moving water, fire, and a handcrafted flagstone patio to create a relaxing backyard retreat.
At the center of the project is a custom natural stone pond and waterfall, designed and built to look as though it has always been part of the landscape. Large natural boulders frame the pond and waterfall, while carefully placed stone helps create a natural transition between the water feature and the surrounding landscape.
Natural Boulder Waterfall & Pond
The waterfall was constructed using individually selected and placed boulders to create a natural-looking series of falls and cascades. Instead of a formal or manufactured appearance, our goal was to recreate the character of a mountain stream you might find here in Western North Carolina.
The moving water provides both a beautiful focal point and the relaxing sound of a natural waterfall.
Dry-Laid Flagstone Patio
Surrounding the water feature is a custom dry-laid flagstone patio. The irregular shapes, textures, and colors of the natural stone complement the boulders around the pond and help tie the entire space together.
The patio provides plenty of room for seating while maintaining the natural character of the landscape.
Custom Gas Fire Pit
We also incorporated a gas fire pit into the patio area, giving the homeowners a comfortable place to gather in the evenings and enjoy the pond and waterfall.
Combining fire and water creates a completely different atmosphere after dark—the sound of the waterfall, the movement of the water, and the warmth of the fire turn the patio into an outdoor space that can be enjoyed well beyond the daytime hours.
